    Many of us know very little about magnets. We recall basic science experiments from elementary school, designed to teach us about the basics of magnetism. Some of us might recall that magnets have two poles. But for many people, we don’t contemplate magnets in our daily lives, nor are we even aware of what a large role they play in our world. Magnet technology has come a long way in the last few decades. In today’s world, magnets have hundreds of uses, including telecommunications, radar systems, computers, satellites, automobiles, and more. We’ll explore are few uses of magnets that the average individual might not be aware of.

    Most of us know that magnets are used to pick up certain types of metal. Construction companies frequently use large magnets to pick up dangerous metal debris on construction sites. Sometimes these magnets are high-tech electromagnets and sometimes they are more basic plate magnets that can be suspended from the front of a vehicle or forklift. Vehicle mounted “sweeper” magnets are also used at new home construction sites. For example, a roofing company might roll a sweeper magnet around a homeowner’s yard to pick up any stray nails once the roofing job is done.

    Another common industrial use of magnets is in conveyor system. Conveyor magnets can be used to remove metal debris from material on a conveyor belt system. An example of this might be a plastic recycling firm that is moving plastic parts by conveyor to a grinder. If a small piece of ferrous metal is fed into the grinder, it will dull the grinding head. Worse yet, if a larger piece of metal get into the grinder, it will likely break down the entire machine, and could even pose the threat of flying metal debris in the work area. In most plastic recycling facilities, a conveyor magnet will be hung directly above the conveyor belt to pick up any metal debris that might be mixed in with the plastic.

    The power of magnets has been harnessed into many high-tech applications, as well. One such high-tech use of magnets can be found in a new type of windows for residential use. A Japanese company, Micro Reactor Systems, has recently introduced a window that will self-darken to provide privacy for the homeowner. Liquid crystal molecules are embedded between two thin layers of glass, and are polarized to react magnetically when a power source is turned on or off. When the power is turned off, the glass is translucent. However, when a low voltage of electricity is turned on, the glass becomes opaque, blocking out light and providing privacy. Though this is a new technology right now and is very expensive, in years to come, it will likely become quite common in both residential and commercial applications.

    The uses of magnets are incredibly vast and we have learned so much about how to harness their powers. Magnets are already used in the production of almost every product we use. If you have a cell phone or an automobile, you are relying on magnets for these items to work. Magnets are also widely used in health care. Almost every major hospital in the work has an MRI machine. This important medical test relies on magnets to show us detailed images of the human body. It is amazing how much we know about magnets, however, it’s even more amazing how much we still have to learn. Scientists discover new uses for magnets and new information about magnetic properties every day. While we can’t predict what new inventions or innovations are coming, we can be sure that magnets will continue to play a role in technologies of the future.

    Technology advancements in many areas make it possible to build devices that were not possible 20, 10, or even 5 years ago. The rapid evolution of Integrated Circuits (IC) has been one key factor and the other key factors are the rapid development of colour screens and camera’s. Advancements in IC’s have led to the reduction in size and weight of mobile terminals as the processing needed can be done faster using smaller devices and at reduced cost. Colour screens with high resolution allow complex applications and services to be visually displayed that 10 years ago would have been in science fiction movies. The pace at which these advancements in technology are occurring is mind boggling and is difficult to predict.

    The Apple iPhone is an excellent example of a phone that is small, slick and has some amazing applications that 5 years ago would have been difficult to support on such a device. Apple have shown traditional mobile manufacturers such as Nokia and Ericsson that application driven devices offering services that customers want is far better than a high specification mobile supporting the latest 3GPP specification. The iPhone may be a weaker device in terms of its RF capabilities but the average person does not really care about that provided the phone works.

    The Google G1 was produced in collaboration with T-Mobile following the foot step of Apple iPhone. However though it had some amazing applications the phone was not as user friendly as the iPhone and was not a success after its launch. Google G2 is a second attempt at capturing some of the markets Apple have gained through their iPhone solution.

    Overall these new phones are allowing people to easily access the internet, browse normal websites and manage their e-mail accounts with just one click of a button. The numbers of applications are huge with many new ones coming out each week. I think finally we have the applications to match what was promised when third generation mobile networks were first launched.

    I just can’t wait to get my hand on the next killer mobile with funky applications such as the Apple iPhone and its services.

    Here are some technology things that you could do with your students. Not everything may be feasible (i.e. cost factors) or appropriate (i.e. security or privacy issues):

    • some of the things we’re already doing,
    • some of the things we’re thinking of doing, and,
    • some of the things are simply wishful thinking, but great ideas have to start somewhere…

    How do you integrate technology into the curriculum? Do you have any ideas to add to the list?

    Class Set of Laptops

    • Get a company to donate a class set of laptops when they upgrade their equipment. (The company can receive a charitable donation tax-credit.)
    • Set up a wi-fi hotspot in your classroom so that students can blog online during independent reading and writing workshops.
    • Purchase digital copies of textbooks to have a paperless classroom. Use text-reading software (i.e. Kurzweil) to highlight and take notes in the textbook.

    Non-Traditional Reading and Writing

    • Teach students the differences between formal, informal, and colloquial language and explore text messaging, chat rooms, and msn-speak as forms of colloquial language.
    • Evaluate the evolving nature of language and develop word-attack skills by examining how words get accepted into everyday language (or the dictionary). For example, Google is now a commonly used noun and verb.
    • Use text-reading software (i.e. Kurzweil) to allow students to access difficult texts.

    Blogging

    • Have students set up personal blogs as a medium to publish their writing portfolios.
    • Explore how Google is a popularity contest. Publish work in an e-zine article directory to understand how to build inbound links. Post comments on other blogs to build inbound links.
    • Explore copyright issues. Publish work in a blog or an e-zine article directory will inevitably end up with your work scraped onto another blog without proper attribution. Explore how that feels and the ethics of using other people’s content without consent.

    Computer Safety

    • Discuss cyber-bullying: ways to protect yourself, how to respond when it happens, and how to avoid accidentally cyber-bullying when blogging.
    • Explore computer safety: password strength, viruses, trojans, phishing, etc.
    • Learn about online dangers and ways to protect yourself.

    Classroom Website

    • Make hand-outs and homework assignments accessible on a classroom website.
    • Use a secure website as a communication tool for marks for both parents and students.
    • Introduce your students to HTML and web design.

    Making Money Online

    • Introduce students to the business of making money online.
    • Explore advertising online – how it works.
    • Fund raise by selling stuff on e-bay.

    • Publish student work in English and in their first language online so that relatives overseas can celebrate in their success.

    Technology as a Teaching Tool

    • Use a data-projector in class to do modeled and shared readings.
    • Use a data-projector in class to do shared writing: the modern equivalent of flip-chart paper
    • Use dynamic geometry software (i.e. Geometer’s Sketchpad) to explore math concepts.

    Music and Technology

    • Buy songs (i.e. itunes) and allow students to DJ their own school dances.
    • Critically examine popular music to determine whether mainstream music is appropriate at a school dance (i.e. Soulja Boy – Crank that)
    • Create your own pod-casts. Students can use free sound-editing software (i.e. audacity) to mix in free sound effects (i.e. ljudo.com) with their digital recordings of their voices.

    Class Projects

    • Send an object around the world and invite people who find the object to leave a message online in the classroom blog.
    • Explore the video making process: scripts, recording, editing, post-production
    • Explore youtube as a medium to publish content.

    Six months ago I was really concerned about the future of my business. I had to decide whether to pursue an opportunity of a life time teaching at Columbia University or continue full-time with my coaching company.

    In the end I decided to cut back the coaching to 3-days a week. But in order to do this and not mess up the company, I had substantially simplify the operations.

    One of biggest simplification steps is counter-intuitive: to really cool it with the technology, which was consuming the company’s vital resources.

    Unusual decision considering my background: BBA and MBA in Information Systems, former systems programmer running a computer system for 250,000 employees. Subsequently ran an internet-based technology company.

    And while I still feel technology is extremely important to effectively compete in today’s market as a small company, enough was enough.

    The spending hours and hours learning the latest and greatest techno-marketing trends like podcasting, affiliate programs, video marketing and on and on.

    Or the almost $20,000 spent on website design and development only to later set up our current website for less than $350 plus$15/month maintenance.

    I have screened, hired, and fired Search Engine Optimization (SEO) vendors that promised increased traffic of and exposure to many, many people.

    What did this do for sales? Market exposure? Quality of service? Customer recognition and loyalty?

    Well, if I were really honest with myself, not a whole lot.

    So when we simplified the company’s technology, it caused me to shift the time and energy I was putting into all those whistles and bells and build relationships with our leads and customers the old-fashioned way. I made phone calls, answered e-mails, and met people, and spoke to live groups.

    Just being with people. Giving them what they most desire… human interaction.

    Now here is the interesting thing. After scaling back a lot of these frivolous technology-based products and services the business is now rocking. Sales are coming in 238% over last year (into the six-figures.)

    All on three days a week.

    Action Step for the Week:

    Take inventory of your technology. Review each system you currently use. Determine your expenses of each (as much as you can.) Do this by adding your direct costs (i.e. monthly product fees) with the indirect costs (i.e. your labor). Compare this total to the revenue it produces.

    Next, seriously consider letting go of any technology not generating a minimum of 3-to-1 sales-to-cost ratio. This means for every $100 you spend on that particular technology it should produce at least $300, otherwise chuck it.

    Advancements in technology, valiant journeys, and important people of the Age of Exploration created an impressive step toward the modern era. Improved technologies, such as the compass, which helped sailors along their journey to reach their destination, were promoted during this age. The brave journeys by many men were incredible, like Gil Eanes’ short, but significant voyage across the Green Sea of Darkness. In the Age of Exploration, many important people decided to move beyond their ability, for example Ferdinand Magellan, who circumnavigated the Earth.

    Many of the significant improvements of the technology were made during the Age of Exploration. First, the caravel’s smooth hull, lateen sail and two rudders were improved by Prince Henry’s designers for the trips that the sailors had to make. The compass, that is crucial part of any type of journey, which was used for looking at the direction one was going, was promoted throughout this age. Prince Henry’s plan for sailing needed the astrolabe, which determined latitude to prepare for their voyage. Improved maps were part of the technology’s improvements during the Age of Exploration and were used to find their destination.

    To sum up, many significant achievements were accomplished during this time. Old technologies were modified for the substantial figures that made successful journeys in their lifetime. Respectable people of all time represented this time period showing consummation during the voyages and improvements. The time period of exploration was an immense accomplishment for the venerated people of the time.

    The abbreviation for LCD is Liquid Crystal Display and this LCD technology provides low power requirements and less weight. LCD screens can also be used as computer monitors. Each pixel in LCDs emit light of intensity for a time period of 20 ms and it typically takes 12 to 25 ms to switch to next stage.

    This technology is based of the function of polarized light. Two thin laminated polarized sheets are attached to the glass having a very thin layer of liquid crystal. It has 2 regular dimensional grids of electrodes, which allows every pixel in an array to be activated and selected individually.

    The LCD technology is used in large screen televisions with active matrix addressing in combination. Earlier LCD models had a low end technology when compared to large screen plasma televisions. But now, the LCD TVs are able to provide a high end performance.

    Currently, sixth generation panels are introduced by branded manufacturers like Sharp Corporation, LG display, Sony and Samsung. The 65 inch panel was first introduced by Sharp in 2004. Then Samsung introduced 82 inch panel in 2005, 100 inch panel by LG Electronics in 2006 and 108 inch panel by Sharp in 2007.

    The High Definition LCD TV was introduced by Silicon Mountain as Allio in 2008 which is integrated with a Blu-ray player.
