    Buying an air conditioner

My current air conditioner is about to quit. It is a GE CarryCool and I don%26#39;t think they%26#39;ve made them for years. If I can%26#39;t find the same one, I need something that weighs the same, only 38 pounds, so I can install it myself. Anything in the 5000-6000 BTU range would be acceptable. Can%26#39;t find anything like that on the web or in local stores.
I could not locate anything quite that lightweight. Could you handle a 46-pound air conditioner? I found two: http://www.air-conditioner-store.com/window_unit_ca5wmvl.html http://www.shopdirect.com/Sharp/AFR50DX.html Here are two air conditioners that weigh 48 pounds: http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3987163 http://heating-and-cooling.hardwarestore.com/33-164-window-air-conditioners/air-conditioner-101743.aspx If these are of interest to you, I%26#39;ll be glad to continue searching for other units in this weight range.
Thanks for the response, pinkfreud. I remember installing the CarryCool (actually three of them over a period of about 20 years). I was just able to handle it and I%26#39;m about seven years older than I was the last time and have a back that%26#39;s sometimes tricky. Guess I%26#39;ll have to find another solution. Thanks anyway. If anyone can find an a/c that%26#39;s no more than 38 pounds, I%26#39;m still very interested. It%26#39;s hard to believe that nobody makes one.
Sorry I couldn%26#39;t find what you need. I hope another Researcher will be able to help. I certainly understand the situation. If I had to lift an air conditioner I would probably pass out.
One more thought: have you considered the portable air conditioners that sit on the floor? Usually they exhaust through a window, but the exhaust hose isn%26#39;t very heavy. http://www.portable-air-conditioners.biz/portable_air_conditioners_sale.htm
There are a couple Sears/Kenmore units here that look very small, unfortunately they don%26#39;t list the weights. Call the Sears store nearest you and ask about models: Kenmore 5150 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes%26amp;vertical=SEARS%26amp;sid=I0083000660003900085%26amp;pid=04274054000 Sears item #04274054000 Mfr. model #74054 Kenmore 5150 BTU Single Room Air Conditioner http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes%26amp;vertical=APPL%26amp;pid=04274055000%26amp;subcat=Single+Room+Units Sears item #04274055000 Mfr. model #74055 SEARS STORE LOCATOR http://www.sears.com/sr/storelocator/framedMap.jsp?targetPage=http://clients.mapquest.com/sears/mqlocator%26amp;vertical=SEARS%26amp;PagePath=http://www.sears.com/sr/storelocator/%26amp;link=search_criteria%26amp;Env=www.sears.com%26amp;adCell=P1%26amp;BV_UseBVCookie=Yes ~~Cynthia
Thanks again pinkfreud, for the empathy and for the floor-unit suggestion. I had considered that and looked at several models a year ago or more but it just didn%26#39;t work out. Still, as a last resort, who knows? I%26#39;ll hope someone comes along with a lightweight unit I can purchase. The current CarryCool is hanging on for now.
